ADJOURNMENT MATTER FOR THE MINISTER FOR HOUSING

My adjournment matter is for the Minister for Housing, here with us tonight at the table, and the action I seek is that the minister join with me to attend the main works sod turn at the Bills Street housing development in Hawthorn. Bills Street is one of many building projects being funded by the government’s unprecedented Big Housing Build, which will boost Victoria’s economic recovery while providing high-quality sustainable housing. Importantly the homes will provide a stable foundation for thousands of Victorians to build their lives. The homes will be built to 7-star efficiency standards, which means they will be more comfortable during the summer and winter months and will save on power bills. There will be no sale of land as part of the development at Bills Street, with the current proposal consisting of 206 dwellings across six buildings, which will be made up of 103 social and 103 affordable homes. Having visited the Bills Street site, these homes will be close to local shops and public transport, which will not only be convenient for the residents but, crucially, connect them to the local community. The government will also prioritise walking and cycling through convenient and safe streets. As part of the consultation process, I will be chairing a community reference group—the CRG— which will represent the local community’s interests in the Bills Street housing project. The CRG offers a local perspective and knowledge and will encourage discussions with residents, businesses and interested groups. It will also help the community understand what is happening on site during planning and construction. The local perspective of the CRG will be crucial in assisting the government manage the construction impacts and maximise the benefits of the project. Whilst the CRG has no formal decision-making capacity, local knowledge will go a long way to ensuring the needs of the community are reflected in the development. I look forward to breaking new ground with the minister at the site of this vitally important project for my community at Hawthorn.
